Narc-Kenya party leader Martha Karua vowed to fight after members of the Orange Democratic Movement party were nominated for cabinet secretary positions by President William Ruto.

In a statement on X, Karua noted that the entire opposition was not considered for the position but ODM, leaving the other opposition coalition parties in the cold.

While Ruto promised to name the remaining cabinet member, Karua has vowed to press on with calls for reforms in the government.

“Let every person stand by the courage of their convictions #AlutaContinua,” Karua said.

Affiliate parties in the Azimio la Umoja- One Kenya coalition have raised their concerns on the suggested broad-based government proposed by Ruto, saying the DAP-K, PNU, Jubilee and Wiper party would not be a party to the talks.

“That for the avoidance of doubt the Azimio-OKA coalition will not be part of the proposed broad-based or any other dialogue with the Kenya Kwanza coalition,” Kalonzo said after goons disrupted his press conference on July 17, 2024.

Among the 21 cabinet secretaries nominated by Ruto for approval in parliament, the affiliate parties in the Azimio coalition lack representation, further widening the cracks within the opposition.

ODM double-speak

On Tuesday, July 23, ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna released a statement that his party was not interested in Ruto’s appointments to cabinet, a position which Homa Bay town MP Peter Kaluma later deconstructed.

“I want to congratulate the President for the appointments but also request that within the week, as soon as tomorrow, we want to see those appointments Baba was to forward today and we want all of them approved, and if that can happen then we are going to push this very fast. We cannot leave anybody out,” Kaluma noted.

He added: “I am saying this because I don’t want some confusion. I am seeing circulations of somebody saying that if ODM members are appointed to government they are going on their own. We met and resolved…so don’t say No because when ODM speaks, even Azimio has spoken.”

So far, Ruto has nominated Andrew Karanja for Agriculture, Rebecca Miano for Tourism, Margaret Ndung’u for ICT, Alice Wahome for Lands, Eric Muga for Water and Davis Chirchir for Transport.

Also, Soipan Tuya has been nominated as Defence CS, Debra Mulongo for Health, Kithure Kindiki for Interior, John Mbadi for Treasury, Salim Mvurya for investments, trade and industry, Opiyo Wandayi for energy, Kipchumba Murkomen for Sports, Hassan Joho for mining, Alfred Mutua for labour, Wycliffe Oparanya for cooperatives, Justin Muturi for public service and Stella Lang’at for gender.
