Wiper Democratic Movement Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has raised alarms over what he describes as an emerging threat of state capture in Kenya.

Speaking on Sunday, October 13, 2024, during a press conference at Panari Sky Hotel in Nairobi, Kalonzo accused the government of using impeachment proceedings against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to shift Kenyans’ attention from pertinent issues.

Kalonzo on Adani deal

The former Vice President accused the government of granting multi-billion shilling deals to the Indian conglomerate Adani Group in an opaque and non-competitive manner.

Kalonzo singled out key sectors of the Kenyan economy—energy, transport, and health—as being at the centre of what he called “a dangerous trend of unchecked privatization and foreign control.”

He argued that the secretive nature of these contracts mirrors the state capture that crippled South Africa’s economy during the presidency of Jacob Zuma.

“Under the cloud of the impeachment drama, Kenya has been ‘Guptaed’ by Adani the way South Africa was state-captured. Kenya is facing an unprecedented threat of state capture where our key sectors—energy, transport, and health—have seen multi-billion deals being granted by the bread-based government to one ADANI in an opaque, non-competitive, and secretive manner,” Kalonzo stated.

Kalonzo’s message to MPs

Kalonzo, during his presser, also took a swipe at Members of Parliament who impeached DP Gachagua, arguing that they had no such powers.

He stated that the public will hold the MPs accountable and that they might lose their seats during the next general elections.

Moreover, he termed the 13th parliament as having already been impeached by the public when protesters invaded it on June 25, 2024, during the Gen Z-led demos.

“I pity the MPs who now can’t go and address their constituents because they went completely against the expectations of the people. The public will hold them accountable, and two years down the line is not far off,” Kalonzo stated.

Kalonzo’s remarks come two days after Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi officially announced the signing of a multi-billion shilling deal between the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO) and Adani Energy Solutions Limited.

CS Wandayi stated that the deal, which is estimated at Ksh95.68 billion, will see the Indian company develop, finance, construct, and operate critical transmission lines and substations across the country.

He noted that the agreement aims to tackle Kenya’s chronic power outages and ensure more reliable electricity access to support the country’s growing economy and industrial ambitions.
