Wiper Democratic Movement party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has vowed to oppose na impeachment motion that will be tabled against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Taking to his official X account on Thursday, September 26, 2024, moments after attending a memorial service for the Hillside Endarasha Academy fire tragedy victims, Kalonzo stated that the looming impeachment motion against Gachagua is part of the government’s plan to distract Kenyans.

Kalonzo also faulted President William Ruto, who is out of the country for the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), for failing to console the families of the 21 pupils who lost their lives in the fire tragedy.

He further argued that the government had misplaced priorities by allowing the Head of State’s allies to push for an impeachment motion against Gachagua instead of finding a solution for the school fires.

Kalonzo who leads the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition that is not allied to the government, went ahead to fault the government for not addressing the controversy surrounding the Adani Group’s plan to take over the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

Kalonzo on capturing opposition

Moreover, Kalonzo accused President Ruto of capturing the opposition instead of addressing the issues facing the country.

“It is very unfortunate that instead of consoling the families of the 21 precious angels who perished in the tragic Hillside Endarasha Academy fire, Ruto is busy racking up frequent flier miles. Instead of directing his efforts towards strengthening the schools’ safety system to ensure that such a tragedy does not happen again, Ruto has allowed his henchmen to distract the country with an Impeachment Motion against his Deputy Assistant,” Kalonzo stated.

“Instead of addressing the Adani heist, and those behind the blatant attempt to take control of key security and strategic infrastructure, Ruto’s priority is to capture the Opposition. As the Government in Waiting, we will not allow these distractions including an Impeachment Motion against the Deputy President to pass unopposed,” he added.

Kalonzo’s statement comes moments after DP Gachagua claimed that there is a scheme calculated to link his staff and allies to the June 25 demos that saw the parliament invaded, in what he has termed as a futile attempt to soil their name and create ground for his looming impeachment.

“This evil scheme is to associate them with violent demonstrations that took place in late June, in a futile attempt to soil my name and hopefully create grounds for the mooted impeachment proceedings against me. Kenyans are intelligent people,” Gachagua stated.

“They know what factors made Kenyans take to the streets. Kenyans also know what the real problems in Kenya are. They surely know Rigathi is not among them. Let our agencies remain professional, follow the rule of law and keep off politics.”
