Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has revealed that Kenyans will soon experience free and fair general elections.

Speaking at the National Conference on the Finalization of the Electoral Reforms before the 2027 General Elections, on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, Kalonzo stated that the journey to a transparent, accountable, and responsible election process has begun.

The opposition leader attributed the election process to Generation Z (Gen Z) stating that Gen Z’s revolution made sure that Kenya will never be the same again.

He further urged the citizenry to join the revolutionaries to ensure every vote counts and election results are no longer disputed.

“The journey to a more transparent, accountable, and responsible election process has already begun. The Gen Z revolution made sure of that and Kenya will never be the same again. We can today make a deliberate choice to join our revolutionaries and help create a Kenya in which every vote counts and election results are no longer disputed,” Kalonzo said.

The Wiper leader said that the report by the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) emphasised the use of technology in elections adding that despite helping increase openness, the use of technology has been a cause of dispute in recent elections.

He further suggested the use of secure, transparent, and tamper-proof technology to protect the integrity of the elections.

“Another significant emphasis of the NADCO study is the use of technology in elections. While technology has helped to increase openness, it has also been a cause of dispute in recent elections Moving forward, we must invest in secure, transparent, and tamper-proof technology to protect the integrity of our elections while also addressing concerns about data security and accessibility,” he said.

“The IEBC, the judiciary, and other relevant bodies must be fully resourced, both financially and technically, to carry out their responsibilities without fear, favour, or external influence.”

Additionally, Kalonzo disclosed that the report also recommended conducting an audit of the electronic voting system to verify its dependability and accountability.

“The NADCO report recommends conducting a thorough audit of the electronic voting system to verify its dependability and accountability. This is more than simply instilling faith in the system: it is also about ensuring that every vote is counted and honoured,” he added.

Voter Registration

He further added that in the report, NADCO highlighted that voter registration and the maintenance of the Voters Register are crucial foundations for ensuring equitable and universal participation of eligible voters in all elections.

“Furthermore, important decisions are made during the election process based on the number of registered voters, such as determining the number and location of polling stations, the number of ballots and election materials to be printed and distributed to polling stations, and the calculation of voter turnout after the elections,” Kalonzo disclosed.

Kalonzo revealed that individuals who want to register as voters are faced with challenges related to issuing ID cards.
