Wiper Democratic Movement party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has intensified his campaign against the Kenya Kwanza government, vowing to bring it down.
The former Vice President made the statement on X on Saturday, August 31, 2024, after addressing a political rally in Mombasa.
“My eyes are wide open na tutapeleka serikali ya Zakayo nyumbani. Mambo ya ajabu yatatokea,” he said, referring to William Ruto as ‘Zakayo’, a political moniker that has been given to the Head of State.
In a video, the former Mwingi North Member of Parliament looked back at how Gen Zs put Ruto’s government in check through demonstrations. He, however, said it was sad that some demonstrators lost lives.
“Nataka mjue kutatokea mambo ya ajabu Kenya hii. Wakenya wamechoka, Gen Z vijana wakauwa na sisi tunawapongezeni Mombasa kwa kuwatoa vijana wenu wa Gen Z,” Kalonzo is heard saying in a video shared on his X handle.
Kalonzo has positioned himself as the main voice of the opposition, especially since the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) lessened their criticism of the Ruto government. The Wiper Party chief has always been quick to oppose any policy that the government introduces.
Opposition against govt policies
Recently, Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) said they are planning to toll major highways in the country, and Kalonzo was quick to oppose it.
“We know that these people are desperate; they cannot wait to raid people’s pockets again. I know they want to introduce road tolls. Well, I want to tell Ruto and his people, if you want to bring road tolls again, please go and build your own roads, not the ones that Kibaki and Uhuru (Kenyatta) built.
“So if you introduce a toll on Thika Super Highway, you are raiding the people’s pockets. So we will reject that,” Kalonzo said as he raised the opposition voice against KeNHA’s plan.
Kalonzo, Eugene Wamalwa, and NARC-Kenya’s Martha Karua have maintained their opposition stance against the government. After four top ODM leaders joined the government as Cabinet Secretaries, Wamalwa claimed that it was a betrayal from the Orange Party.
“For us as Azimio to actually go into bed with Ruto is betrayal of the highest order. And that is why, as we sit here today, we in Azimio have reached a point of divorce. In a marriage, when grounds of a divorce arrive, one of those is when you have irreconcilable differences.
“That is where we have reached, and we have disagreed as a matter of principle because people are saying Okoa Kenya from Zakayo, but part of Azimio is saying tuokoe Zakayo,” Wamalwa said in a recent statement.
Kalonzo and his team’s position on Ruto’s government comes after the president ended his four-day tour of the Nyanza region, the perceived political base of Raila Odinga.
