Opposition politicians have accused Jubilee Party of bribing voters to back its candidate in the Kibra by-election McDonald Mariga.
ODM and ANC claimed the ruling party was buying voters in its campaigns for the November 7 mini-poll.
While campaigning for its candidate Bernard Imran Okoth, ODM leaders alleged that voters have been queuing for money at Deputy President William Ruto’s residence.
ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi also accused Jubilee of “pouring” money in Kibra to influence the voters.
“When people in Kibra say ‘huyo ni hoteli’ (he is a hotel), what does that tell you? It means Jubilee is pouring money,” Mudavadi said, while calling on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to investigate Jubilee’s conduct.
Speaking at the Friends Church on Ngong’ Road where he attended a Sunday service, Mudavadi called for a free and fair contest whose outcome will reflect the will of the people.
ODM politicians, including Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, Makadara MP George Aladwa and several elected leaders, told Kibra voters to “eat” the money, but vote for Imran.
“We have evidence that someone is pouring a lot of money. Take it but make the right decision come November 7,” Aladwa said.
While campaigning in Laini Saba yesterday, Mariga promised to transform the constituency if elected.
MPs who accompanied him, including Kimani Ichung’wa (Kikuyu), Kimani Ngunjiri (Bahati) and Nixon Korir (Lang’ata) criticised Nominated MP Maina Kamanda for campaigning for ODM candidate in the by-election.
ANC candidate Eliud Owalo promised to complete stalled road projects in the area and ensure residents have access to electricity.
Ford Kenya candidate Butichi Khamisi, who carried out a door-to-door campaign, pledged to create jobs for the youth by reclaiming opportunities that, he said, had been hijacked by cartels.
