Where is Kalonzo Musyoka?
By David Nthua, July 27, 2026Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka risks losing political ground as his opposition rivals intensify grassroots campaigns ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Kalonzo has not disappeared from national politics. He launched a 13-point presidential agenda in June and recently addressed supporters in Tseikuru, Kitui County.
He also joined opposition leaders during their Western Kenya tour and participated in the Ol Kalou by-election campaigns.
However, his recent public presence has appeared limited compared with that of other presidential hopefuls.
That matters because political campaigns are increasingly being fought through rallies, roadside meetings, church services and direct engagement with voters.
Opposition rivals occupy the political stage
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has embarked on a six-day tour of Embu and Meru counties.
His mission is to challenge attempts to divide Mt Kenya into eastern and western political blocs.
He is also seeking to consolidate his position before the opposition chooses its presidential candidate.
Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and the Linda Mwananchi movement spent the weekend campaigning in Trans Nzoia and Bungoma.
Their rallies attracted several opposition leaders and culminated in a major meeting at Bungoma Posta Grounds.
Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i is also increasing his visibility.
The Jubilee Party deputy leader recently toured Meru and attended public engagements in Nairobi.
His movements are helping him build a political profile outside his Gusii stronghold.
Every rally allows these leaders to test messages, build local networks and dominate media coverage.
Kalonzo risks allowing his competitors to define the opposition contest before he fully enters the field.
Silence could weaken Kalonzo’s presidential bid
Kalonzo remains one of the opposition’s most experienced leaders. He has served as vice-president and contested the presidency before. He also retains a loyal Lower Eastern support base.
But experience alone may not be enough.
The latest TIFA poll showed Edwin Sifuna gaining support as Kalonzo and Gachagua declined.
That trend should concern Wiper strategists because political momentum can shift quickly when voters repeatedly see one candidate and rarely encounter another.
Kalonzo may be concentrating on negotiations, coalition building and campaign structures away from public rallies. His allies are also mobilising the Kamba community behind his presidential bid.
Yet elections are not won in boardrooms alone.
As Gachagua campaigns in Mt Kenya East, Sifuna mobilises Western Kenya and Matiang’i expands nationally, Kalonzo must decide whether to remain a coalition negotiator or become a visible presidential campaigner.
The longer he stays away from the main political stage, the louder the question becomes: Where is Kalonzo Musyoka?
