National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has paid a visit to the ailing Kwanza Constituency Member of Parliament (MP), Ferdinand Wanyonyi, in India where he is receiving treatment.

In a statement shared via X on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, Wetang’ula said the legislator is recuperating after he was flown to the Asian country for specialised medical attention late 2025.

”I visited Kwanza Constituency MP Ferdinand Wanyonyi at KIMS Health Care Management Limited in Kerala, India, where he is undergoing specialised treatment. I was encouraged by the progress he has made and remain optimistic about his recovery,” Wetang’ula said.

The Speaker further confirmed that reports from the medical team at the KIMS Health Care Management Limited in Kerala indicate the MP is responding well to treatment.

”The medical team, led by Dr Nitha J, a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Consultant, briefed me on his condition and confirmed that he is responding well to treatment and rehabilitation under close medical supervision. I was reassured that he is receiving comprehensive, multidisciplinary care and that his condition has stabilised,” Wetang’ula said.

The visit comes after Wetang’ula quashed reports circulating claiming that the Kwanza lawmaker had passed away. Speaking on the floor of the House on Thursday, December 4, 2025, Wetang’ula clarified the rumours, revealing that the veteran lawmaker had been unwell and recently transferred to India for specialised treatment. He further told the lawmakers that Wanyonyi was responding well to treatment.

Wanyonyi taken ill

“I want to inform the house that the Hon. Ferdinand Wanyonyi, the member for Kwanza, is unwell. He was in Nairobi Hospital for about a month, and the doctors recommended that we take him to India,” Wetang’ula told the lawmakers.

The Speaker disclosed that he personally spoke with the MP on a conference call on Wednesday and that the Clerk of the National Assembly had also spoken with him earlier Thursday morning.
He also condemned individuals spreading false information about Wanyonyi’s condition, calling them “evil rumour mongers” intent on causing unnecessary panic and distress among constituents.

“Yesterday, I had a conference call with him, and this morning the clerk did the same. I’m saying this because I want to send a message to the evil rumourmongers out there in his constituency that he passed on, and we are holding on to information maliciously. He has not passed on; he’s in a hospital in India and responding well to treatment,” Wetang’ula said.

Wanyonyi, a long-serving legislator known for his calm temperament and steady contributions in Parliament, has been away from public events in recent weeks, prompting speculation in his constituency.
