We will fulfill all our 2022 election campaign promises, President says
President William Ruto has defended the affordable housing project, saying it will empower ordinary Kenyans.
He said his administration was committed to fulfilling all campaign promises. “This project is a clear demonstration of our dedication to creating job opportunities for young people,” he said.
He said those who have gone to court to block the projects will not succeed because the Constitution recognises every Kenyan’s right to housing.
He added that the projects will create thousands of jobs for the youth. “The projects are going to employ unskilled laborers, plumbers architects and many other skilled people,’’ he said.
The President was accompanied by his deputy Rigathi Gachagua, Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula, Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka, Senator Wafula Wakoli, Cabinet Secretaries Ezekiel Machogu (Education), Susan Nakhumicha (Health), Leader of Majority in the National Assembly Kimani Ichung’wah and MPs Martin Wanyonyi (Webuye East) and John Chikati (Tongaren).
The President kicked off his tour in Tongaren where he launched Naitiri Township Primary School, a joint project between the national government and the M-Pesa foundation.
He also presided over the ground breaking of Naitiri modern market at a cost of Sh50 million.
Ruto also launched the construction of a 20,000-unit affordable housing project in Kanduyi sub county.
“We are committed to launching development projects across the country,” Ruto said at Musikoma ward. “In Bungoma, we will construct 20,000 housing units, with 3,000 already underway.”
ICT hub
Ruto said housing projects will create and estimated 30,000 jobs.
The President also announced plans to establish an ICT hub in Bungoma town, with the aim of creating 500 digital jobs.
“Our government is laser-focused on creating opportunities in the digital space,” he said.
Lusaka welcomed the national government’s initiative, saying it has the potential to transform the county.
“This project will revitalize Bungoma town and its economy, while also providing much-needed employment for our young people,” he said.
