Wamuchomba says parliament no longer defends people’s rights

Githunguri Member of Parliament (MP) Gathoni Wamuchomba has accused Parliament of losing its independence.

Speaking on Thursday, September 4, 2025, during an interview with a local TV station, Wamuchomba claimed that legislative processes are now heavily dictated by the Presidency and other external forces.

The former Kiambu Woman Representative lamented that MPs are no longer able to freely advocate for the interests of their constituents, as bills and motions are often influenced—or even blocked—by the Executive.

“The independence of Parliament has been drowned by other forces and powers to the extent that a bill will be dropped off the tray just because the presidency is interested in a certain bill,” Wamuchomba said.

The lawmaker who was elected on the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party ticket under Kenya Kwanza but has now shifted allegiance towards the kid on the block, Kenya Moja Alliance, says she is a victim of the dictatorship in parliament.

According to her, several bills meant to benefit the common mwananchi have been dropped in favour of the bills that the presidency has an interest in.

As a result, Wamuchomba says parliament is now not the right place to advocate for people’s rights.

“I don’t think Parliament is the right platform to advocate for people’s rights anymore,” she said.

Babu Owino on parliament

Her sentiments were echoed by her Embakasi East counterpart, Babu Owino, who argued that there is nothing the MPs can do as long as the Speaker of the National Assembly is siding with the president.

According to Babu Owino, a lawmaker cannot win anything against the state as long as a majority of the MPs are in bed with the government of the day.

“In Parliament, there is nothing that you can do so long as the Speaker is in bed with the government, so long as the majority of members are in bed with the government. Somebody was asking me to take a bill to Parliament to impeach the President. I said I am not a talented time waster, you will take it for optics,” Babu Owino said.
