Wambugu welcomes Matiang’i to contest presidency on Jubilee ticket
By Mabonga Makhanu, July 14, 2025Former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu has welcomed former interior cabinet secretary Fred Matiang’i to Jubilee, saying that he is the most suitable to fly the party’s presidential flag.
In a statement released on Monday, July 14, 2025. According to Ngunjiri, Matiang’i has a strong history with the Jubilee Party, having delivered his most notable achievements while serving under its administration.
He acknowledges that Matiang’i’s reputation and contributions are closely tied to Jubilee’s legacy, making him a natural fit for the party.

However, based on these contributions, Ngunjiri finds him a suitable candidate for the 2027 presidency
“As Jubilee, we welcome Matiangi to undertake the vetting process to be our flag bearer. This morning #Matiangi amesema kama ni ukoo … ni #Jubilee. His key achievements were also made as a member of the Jubilee. What we know him for was under the flag of Jubilee. All true. I am a witness. And as a Jubilee member and having worked with #Matiangi, I would be very happy to have him as our flag bearer.” Wambugu said.
Vetting procedure
However, Ngunjiri has clarified that the Jubilee Party has a defined process in place for choosing its presidential flag bearer.
Despite his personal support for Matiang’i, he maintains that the former CS must subject himself to the party’s vetting procedures, which include a formal application, engagement with the party’s seven million members across the country, and a countrywide campaign to present his vision and mission.
Ngunjiri further states that Matiang’i will also be required to compete with any other interested candidates under equal conditions and face vetting by the Party’s National Delegates Conference (NDC). Only after this full process can Jubilee officially name him as the party’s presidential flag bearer.
“This means that as much as I welcome Matiangi as our flag-bearer, he actually has to apply to the party & present his desire to be the flag bearer. He also has to explain to us why he thinks he’s the best person to fly our flag.” He added.

Ngunjiri, a member of the NDC, has expressed that he would personally vote for Matiang’i—unless circumstances change or he himself chooses to enter the race.
“But speaking for myself and as an NDC member, I would vote for him unless he changes. unless I decide to seek the party’s mandate to be flagbearer myself,” he concluded.
