Wambugu questions Gachagua’s motive in fuel scandal after defending energy bosses

By , April 4, 2026

Former Nyeri Town Member of Parliament (MP) Ngunjiri Wambugu has publicly questioned the motives of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua for defending energy sector officials linked to the ongoing fuel importation scandal.

In a pointed statement shared via his official Facebook account on Saturday, April 4, 2026, Wambugu expressed confusion over Gachagua’s stance, suggesting that his defence of individuals under investigation raises more questions than answers.

“I am a relatively smart guy, but I honestly do not understand why Jofri is defending these guys; what exactly is going on here?” Wambugu said.

Clash over fuel scandal narrative

The remarks come amid a deepening probe into the irregular importation of fuel, a case that has already seen senior officials questioned and some energy sector executives step down.

Gachagua, speaking earlier in Murang’a County, dismissed the arrests and investigations as politically motivated.

He claimed the crackdown was not about accountability, but rather linked to business rivalries within the fuel sector.

According to Gachagua, the individuals targeted in the probe are victims of competition tied to the government’s fuel importation framework.

Gachagua fingers Ruto

In a dramatic escalation, Gachagua accused President William Ruto of using the scandal to shield personal business interests connected to the Government-to-Government (G-to-G) fuel arrangement.

He argued that the arrests were part of a broader scheme to eliminate competition and consolidate control over the lucrative energy supply chain.

Investigations ongoing

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has already confirmed that it is probing the suspected irregular procurement of an emergency fuel cargo, working with both local and international agencies.

Officials have emphasised that anyone found culpable will face legal consequences, regardless of their position or political affiliation.

The fuel scandal has quickly become one of the most closely watched issues in the country, touching on concerns about corruption, transparency, and the cost of energy.

As political leaders continue to trade accusations, attention remains firmly on investigators to establish the facts and determine accountability.
