Wambugu Ngunjiri tells Matiang’i he can win all Nyeri votes without relying on anyone
By Mabonga Makhanu, March 25, 2026Former Nyeri Town Member of Parliament (MP) Ngunjiri Wambugu has told Jubilee Deputy Party Leader Fred Matiang’i that he can secure all Nyeri votes without necessarily going through any other leader.
While speaking during a Jubilee Party rally in Nyeri Town, which followed a party office launch in the town on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, the outspoken politician—who is a known critic of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua—told Matiang’i that he does not need anyone else to campaign and visit Nyeri County, which is Gachagua’s hometown.
“Ukikuja Nyeri, usiwahi ogopa; huku si lazima uletwe na mtu. Kura huku uko nazo, na tutakupatia direct.”
Despite Gachagua and Matiang’i both being in the United Opposition.
Wambugu Ngunjiri has been attacking the Democracy for Citizens (DCP) leader for a long time, despite retired President Uhuru Kenyatta warning Jubilee Party members that nobody should speak ill of Gachagua and that anyone who does would be expelled from the party.
Despite this, Wambugu’s onslaught on Gachagua has not ceased and appears to be escalating daily.
Gachagua-Kioni meeting
His fellow Ndaragwa former counterpart, Jeremiah Kioni, who was also a known critic of the former deputy president, recently decided to shelve their previous feud after a meeting with Gachagua.
Since the Karen meeting, Kioni has softened his stance against Gachagua and recently came out to declare his full support for him and his DCP party, describing him as the Mount Kenya leader. He also added that what Gachagua has achieved in the past one year after his ouster from office, the late Raila Odinga never achieved during his years in the opposition.
Kioni, who had remained silent on Gachagua’s impeachment for a long time, came out to defend him, spelling doom for the state and blaming it for orchestrating Gachagua’s impeachment.
Kioni added that “the mountain hates betrayal and never forgets”, saying that Gachagua’s impeachment was a clear act of betrayal and that the Mount Kenya region will neither forget nor forgive Ruto for what he did to their son, Gachagua.

During the forum meant to popularise the Jubilee Party in the Mount Kenya region, which was the second leg of the popularisation effort after the Nyandarua chapter, Kioni wore a sufuria on his head.
This was symbolic, reminiscent of the cost-of-living protests in 2023, when Kioni used to don a sufuria on his head to send a message to the government that the cost of living was extremely high.
