The family of Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa has asked Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba to stop making public statements about them as they mourn their mother.

In a brief statement shared on X by the senator on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, the family said the MP’s actions had caused them distress during a difficult time.

“Through your statements and actions, you have continued to cause our family immense pain during this period of grief as we continue to mourn our mother,” the statement read.

The family urged the MP to step back and allow them to grieve in peace.

“With all due respect, we kindly ask that you allow our mother, who lived a full and dignified life, to rest in peace,” they added.

The response comes a day after Wamuchomba demanded a public apology from Senator Thang’wa over remarks he made during his mother’s burial.

In her earlier statement, the MP accused the senator of spreading false claims and turning the funeral into a political platform. She said she had informed him in advance that she might miss the burial due to a parliamentary trip to the United Kingdom.

“I had not planned to attend the funeral since I had a parliamentary trip to UK,” she said, adding that she still visited the home earlier to offer condolences and contributed Ksh50,000.

Photo row and denial

Wamuchomba also addressed a photo that sparked debate, saying it was taken after the prayer service and not during the ceremony.

“The photo I took was not part of the prayer meeting and majority of people had dispersed,” she said.

She further denied claims that she disrupted funeral preparations, including claims that she attempted to pull down tents.

“Do you have witnesses to this effect? Do you have pictures or videos as evidence?” she asked.

The MP insisted that the senator should apologise publicly.

“I demand for a public apology because you know you lied for public sympathy,” she said.

Speaking during the burial, Thang’wa had taken a softer tone, saying the family had chosen to forgive.

“We have prayed and forgiven her as a family. We pray that she never does that to other people,” he said.
