Starehe MP Mwago blasts Kahiga and Wanga over divisive remarks

Starehe Member of Parliament Amos Mwago has condemned recent statements by Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, describing them as divisive and dangerous for national unity.

In a statement posted on his X account on Thursday, October 23, 2025, Mwago expressed concern over what he described as a worrying return of divisive politics in the country.

“We are deeply concerned by the recent remarks attributed to Mutahi Kahiga and Gladys Wanga, which have stirred serious alarm over the revival of tribal rhetoric in our nation,” he said.

According to Mwago, a recent video clip showed Kahiga suggesting that the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga was a ‘divine intervention’.

“In a recent video clip, Kahiga appeared to insinuate that the passing of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga was a “divine intervention” favouring one region over another, comments widely condemned as insensitive, divisive and unbecoming of a public leader,” he stated

He further criticised Wanga’s statements, saying they have drawn entire communities into the controversy, escalating ethnic tension rather than calming it.

“Concurrently, Wanga’s own utterances have been criticised for dragging entire communities into the dispute and thereby fanning the flames of ethnic tension instead of calming them,” he said.

Mwago called on the leaders to reflect on the impact of their words and to take responsibility for promoting national cohesion.

“Such rhetoric runs directly counter to the spirit of national unity that our Constitution enshrines and that we must all uphold,” he said.

He emphasised that Kenya is a nation of many communities, each with an equal stake in the country’s progress, and no single tribe should claim preferential treatment.

“Tribalism has no place in Kenya whatsoever. We are building. The virtues of equality, respect and cohesion must guide our public discourse and leadership far more than narrow ethnic appeal. Kenya is home to many communities, each of which has a rightful stake in the nation’s progress and development, and no one tribe has a claim to preferential treatment,” Mwago said.

In closing, Mwago urged Kahiga and Wanga to publicly retract their statements and commit to leadership that unites all Kenyans.

“We call on both Kahiga and Wanga to recognise the gravity of their words, publicly retract the divisive statements, and commit to fostering inclusive leadership that honours all Kenyans equally. Anything less is a betrayal of the promise of our common future,” he added.
