Senator Mungatana predicts opposition’s 2027 loss, says UDA has built powerful machine
By Mustafa Juma, June 16, 2026Tana River Senator Danson Mungatana has predicted that the opposition will suffer defeat in the 2027 general election.
Speaking during a televised interview on a local TV station on the night of Monday, June 15, 2026, Mungatana argued that the ruling Kenya Kwanza coalition has already built a strong political structure he described as a “powerful machine”.
Mungatana claimed that the opposition is poorly organised and lacks the electoral preparation needed to mount a serious challenge to the ruling alliance led by President William Ruto.
The senator directly challenged opposition leaders, saying they should begin preparing explanations for their anticipated loss.
“I am telling the opposition, prepare your defeat speech, which we know you will say the election was rigged, there was not enough space to prepare, etc.,” Mungatana said.
He argued that such statements have historically been used by opposition parties after electoral defeat, adding that similar outcomes were likely in 2027.
Claims of poor opposition preparedness
Mungatana criticised the opposition political organisation, claiming that rival leaders are not adequately preparing for elections at the grassroots level.
He said opposition politicians are failing to engage in structured electoral planning, including voter mapping and polling station-level coordination.
“They are not preparing. They do not know how many people are in each polling station. They are not there; they are on top of vehicles, making noise,” he said.
According to him, effective election victory requires detailed organisation rather than public rallies alone.

Praise for UDA’s structure
The senator contrasted the opposition with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party machinery, saying the Kenya Kwanza coalition has strengthened its internal organisation ahead of the next election.
“We now have a machine called UDA, and we are adding others,” he said.
Mungatana suggested that the coalition’s expanding political structure would be central to its electoral success in 2027.

ODM and opposition realignments
The senator also referred to political shifts within the opposition, claiming that some former rivals, such as the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), are now aligning with the ruling coalition.
“ODM is now coming with us,” he said.
His remarks come amid ongoing political realignments across Kenya’s political landscape, where parties and leaders continue to explore potential coalitions ahead of the next general election.
As Kenya edges closer to the 2027 polls, political leaders from both the government and opposition are increasingly engaging in early campaign rhetoric, with a focus shifting to party structures, coalition strength, and voter mobilisation strategies.
Mungatana’s comments add to a growing narrative within Kenya Kwanza leadership that the ruling coalition is better organised and more strategically prepared than its rivals.
Opposition leaders, however, have in other forums maintained that they are consolidating efforts to present a united front capable of challenging the current administration.
