Senate to hold plenary and committee sittings in Kilifi in September 2026

The Senate has resolved to hold its plenary and committee sittings in Kilifi County from September 21 to 25, 2026.

The decision, which was passed following a vote in the chamber, follows a recommendation from the Senate Business Committee to hold sessions away from the traditional Parliament buildings in Nairobi.

According to a speaker of the Senate, Amason Kingi, during a session on May 5, 2026, this initiative aligns with a 2023 resolution to conduct one-week county sittings every September during the term of the fourth Senate, except during election years.

“Acknowledging the recommendation of the Senate Business Committee that a sitting of the Senate be held away from the traditional premises in Parliament buildings Nairobi during the time of the 13th Parliament and the subsequent resolution of the Senate made on 8 March 2023 to hold plenary and committee sittings in the counties for one week within September in every session. of the fourth senate except during an election year,” Kingi stated.

Bringing the Senate closer to the people

The primary objective of the relocation is to enhance public awareness of the Senate’s role and to bring the legislative process closer to the general public.

According to the resolution, the Kilifi sittings will focus on promoting the work of the Senate and highlighting new opportunities for citizens to engage in legislative processes.

“To promote the role and work of the Senate and enhance public awareness regarding the business of the Senate and Parliament in general, two, highlight existing and new opportunities for engagement in the legislative processes. Three, develop and strengthen partnerships at the county level of government and provide an opportunity to members and staff of the county assemblies to learn and share best practices with senators and parliamentary officers,” Kingi said.

Previous outside sessions

Kilifi will be the latest county to host the Senate, following previous successful outreach sittings in Uasin Gishu (2018), Kitui (2019), Turkana (2023), and Busia (2025).

“Further acknowledging the successes made during the previous sittings of the senate outside Nairobi held in Gishu, Kitui, Turkana and Busia counties in 2018, 2019, 2023 and 2025, respectively. Now therefore, pursuant to article (126)1 of the constitution, the senate resolved to hold its plenary and committee sittings in Kilifi County from 21 to 25 September 2026,” Kingi announced.
