A senate committee that considered the controversial Political Parties (amendment) Bill has proposed it be passed without amendments.

Tabling its report before the floor of the Senate yesterday, the Senate Committee on Justice, Legal Affairs, and Human Rights quashed all views collected during a two-day public participation exercise held last week.

“Having considered the Political Parties (Amendment) Bill (National Assembly Bills No. 56 of 2021) and the submissions received thereon, the Senate Standing Committee on Justice, Legal Affairs and Human Rights recommend that the Senate passes the Bill,” the committee chaired by Nyamira Senator Okong’o Omogeni (pictured) said in its report.

Consequently, Speaker Ken Lusaka has given senators 24 hours to go through the report on the bill in readiness for the Second Reading of the Bill which is scheduled for today at 2.30 pm.

“Pursuant to Standing Order 145, upon conclusion of the Second Reading, the Bill will stand committed to the Committee of the Whole.

At the Committee of the Whole, Senators may submit amendments to the Bill for consideration,” Lusaka said in his communication to the House.

He directed senators wishing to introduce amendments to the Political Parties (Amendment) Bill (National Assembly Bills No. 56 of 2021) to submit to the Office of the Clerk by 2pm today, with no exception.
