Safina Party pushes economic revolution to reclaim power for the people

The Safina Party has marked a leadership transition and launched an ambitious agenda aimed at empowering Kenyans with an “Economic Revolution.”

The National Delegates Conference (NDC), held on Thursday, September 18, 2025, at Ngong Racecourse, saw outgoing leader Paul Muite hand over the party’s reins to 2027 presidential hopeful Jimmy Wanjigi.

The ceremony emphasised continuity in leadership and immediate action against perceived governance failures.

Handover and Vision for Change

Safina Deputy Leader Willis Otieno highlighted the significance of the transition in a post on X dated September 19, 2025: “Yesterday, @SafinaPartyKE held our Special NDC where we ushered in a new chapter in our journey. Jimmy officially took over the mantle from Senior Counsel @Paul_Muite; a true champion of justice, freedom, and integrity. We thank Paul for his decades of sacrifice and service to the party and to the nation. His legacy reminds us that leadership is not about titles, but about standing firm for truth and accountability. This transition is more than a handover, it is a call to action. Safina now marches forward with one unshakable mission: an Economic Revolution. A revolution to free Kenyans from odious debt, to restore dignity to work, and to return power where it belongs; to the people.”

Otieno also assured Kenyans that if Safina forms the next government, police excesses will be a thing of the past.

Muite, a key figure, urged immediate reforms: “There are things that cannot wait until the next elections. The corruption we are witnessing cannot wait for another two and a half years.”

FIST agenda

In his inaugural speech as party leader, Wanjigi unveiled the “FIST Agenda,” which emphasizes universal health coverage, free education, repudiation of “odious debts,” and police reforms. Otieno reinforced this focus on security, proposing elected OCPDs to curb police excesses: “The ‘above’ must be the people. Every OCPD in this country should be elected by the people of that division. We must give power back to the people—that is our promise on security.”

Wanjigi echoed Muite’s sentiments, insisting that the current regime should not serve until 2027. He dismissed the popular “wanatam” slogan, saying it should instead be “half term”.

Muite also called for immediate public demonstrations, stating, “The issue of corruption cannot wait. What I am saying is that the new leadership, together with Gen Zs, needs to lead maandamano tomorrow.”

The party’s resurgence follows Wanjigi’s exit from ODM in 2022, which revitalised Safina after a period of dormancy. Otieno’s critiques of police operations justified as “orders from above” included proposals for People’s Boards at police stations, reflecting broader governance reforms like the IPOA Strategic Plan 2025–2030 launched on September 17, 2025.
