Sabina seeks direct nominations for female aspirants during polls

Murang’a Woman Representative Sabina Chege (pictured) is proposing political parties give direct nominations to female candidates vying for elective seats.

Chege said the move would help increase chances of having more women elected and boost gender balance in political leadership. She however  said this should be for the strong candidates who will be able  face off with the male opponents at the ballot come August.

 “I know political parties can support us in getting more women on board and even support them financially where possible,” she said.

 “I would also urge the presidential candidates to consider picking female running mates so that we can have gender balance in leadership”  she added.

Chege also urged women not to shy away from vying for the seats as they have the same capacity as men.

 “Women should not be cowed or bow down to any form intimidation, they should put a brave face”she remarked.

 Chief  Administrative Secretary in the ministry of Labour and Social protection Rachael Shebesh on her part said the ministry is keen to support women leadership in all the sectors.  

She said they have identified seven female candidates who shall be vying for the gubernatorial seats in various counties and they shall support their bid.

 “We are not looking at their political parties but we would like to ensure that when the Council of Governors sit, there will be women representation,” said Shebesh.

  The two spoke in Kandara, Murang’a when they paid a visit to Eddah Gachukia, a  former nominated MP.
