President William Ruto and his Deputy Rigathi Gachagua steered clear of politics during the 21st National Prayer Breakfast at the Safari Park Hotel, Nairobi County on Thursday, May 30, 2024.

The ruling party, United Democratic Alliance (UDA), has in the recent past been involved in a series of infighting that could divide it according to Secretary General Cleophas Malala.

In a palpable deviation from the norm, the two leaders avoided the party wrangles, choosing to crack humorous statements completely unrelated to the infighting.

UDA politics

In a bold statement that targeted high-ranking members of the party on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, Malalah called out Kapseret Member of Parliament (MP) Oscar Sudi, Githunguri MP Gathoni wa Muchomba and Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga.

The former gubernatorial aspirant called the leaders to order, saying their rhetoric was getting divisive and that disciplinary action was bound to be taken against them should they continue along that path.

But in a quick rejoinder, the leaders rebuffed Malala's remarks, calling him a 'very junior officer' at the UDA secretariat.

Muchomba and Moses Kuria have openly revealed their differences with Gachagua, a matter which has threatened to polarise the politics of the Mount Kenya region.

Malalah was reacting to a recent wave of attacks from Mount Kenya leaders and Sudi aimed towards Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Gachagua had previously told off Sudi against 'meddling with the affairs of other constituencies' in the Rift Valley.

Sudi would, however, refuse to take the comments lightly, and fired back at the embattled deputy, saying he was not the type to be intimidated.

Sudi is a close confidant of President Ruto and is seen to enjoy unfettered access to the State House and the power play that comes with such proximity.

Other leaders who were warned against politicking were Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and Public Service CS Moses Kuria.

"Additionally, it has come to my attention that some Cabinet Secretaries have been involving themselves in political activities, contrary to the law which requires them to remain apolitical. Hon Moses Kuria, the Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Gender and Affirmative Action, your primary responsibility is to serve the people within your docket. Should you wish to engage in politics, you are welcome to resign," the statement read.
