President William Ruto has called out the opposition for referring to Kenya as a failed state, teasingly insisting that if there was failure, then the failure is in their minds.

Speaking at the Nairobi statehouse during the commissioning of interns under the national housing program on Friday, January 23, 2026, Ruto has Disputed the opposition’s claim by indicating projecting Kenya’s economic growth, stating that Kenya is now among the top six largest economy in the continent, ahead of neighboring countries like Ethiopia, and this has been necessitated by disciplined policies and strategic decisions that Kenya has taken through his leadership.

“We have made the necessary decisions. Today, I can confidently stand before this gathering and before the people of Kenya that our economy is way different from what it was in 2022,” Ruto said.

Ruto on Kenya’s economic growth

Ruto has used the platform to explain why Kenya is not a failed state by analysing the projects the government is currently undertaking and praising them for their attempts to set the nation behind, adding that the challenge that Kenya is facing is not about the development agenda, but a problem of leadership

Ruto also anticipated that Kenya would grow further in the coming months. Saying that foreign exchange reserves have also surged, rising from about $7 billion, roughly two and a half months of import cover, to a historic high of $12.3 billion.

Ruto defends government projects

The government’s projects were also a key highlight that the president used to dismiss the opposition indicating that the affordable housing project, the universal project, among other government-led projects, are working, explaining in detail what the government is doing to implement them.

The opposition has been on the frontline to dismiss these government projects as failed reasons why Ruto has taken time to continuously dismiss claims of Kenya as a failed nation
