President William Ruto has said that Ukambani has suffered marginalisation for decades because of politics. Speaking on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at the Eastern Kenya Integrated College in Mitaboni, Machakos County, he said his government is now working to transform the region alongside the rest of the country.

Ruto attended a church service at the college before laying the foundation stone for the construction of new laboratories. He told the gathering that his administration had managed to stabilise the economy, which had been at risk of collapsing, and that this would allow the government to invest in all regions fairly.

“We have managed to consolidate and stabilise our economy that was at the risk of collapsing. Now, we are on the path to transforming every part of Kenya — including Ukambani that has for far too long suffered marginalisation due to politics,” he said.

Ukambani and national politics

The region, long considered the political stronghold of Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, has often found itself outside government’s centre of power. Kalonzo last held a senior role in government during President Mwai Kibaki’s administration, when he served as Vice President. Since then, he has supported Raila Odinga in three unsuccessful presidential bids in 2013, 2017 and 2022.

Kalonzo has been one of Raila’s most loyal allies, often described as his running mate of choice. He even threw his weight behind Raila’s campaign for the African Union Commission chairmanship earlier this year. Raila is now focused on supporting Ruto’s leadership. But for Kalonzo, he has turned his attention to 2027, declaring that he will be on the ballot.

The Wiper leader, who in December 2023 turned 70, has made it clear that he will not step aside for Raila again. He has dismissed claims that he could quit the race, saying his rivals were spreading falsehoods because they fear his candidature.

‘I know my enemies are suffering because they know for sure I will participate in the 2027 elections, God willing,” Kalonzo said.

A battle for the region

Ruto’s remarks in Machakos come at a time when political attention on Ukambani is increasing. The region, which often votes as a bloc, will be a key battleground in the 2027 polls. Kalonzo remains the dominant figure there, but the President is keen to win support by addressing development gaps and making sure government projects reach local communities.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and now the Deputy President, Kithure Kindiki, have also made several visits to the region, signalling efforts by the government to woo Ukambani leaders and residents.
