Kathiani Member of Parliament (MP) Robert Mbui has endorsed Babu Owino for the Nairobi Gubernatorial seat.

Speaking on Monday, September 29, 2025, the Wiper Patriotic Front-allied MP asserted optimism of his Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) colleague to succeed Governor Johnson Sakaja in 2027.

Capable

“I have been in the National Assembly with Babu Owino now for the second term. I feel he is capable of the job, and because of him, we also say that Sakaja should be a one-term governor,” he stated.

The statement came shortly after the ODM lawmaker declared support for Kalonzo as the best candidate to face President Ruto in 2027.

The Embakasi East MP urged Kenyans, especially the youth, to register as voters. He argued that registering to vote was the only way to bring change at the ballot.

Returning the favours

While embracing the endorsement, Kalonzo Musyoka hinted at major changes in his party structure and said he is ready to offer the Embakasi East MP a top leadership role.

While signalling the impending party’s structural changes in the recently rebranded Wiper party, Kalonzo revealed that a new structure of four deputy party leaders would be co-opted to serve under a national leader.

He explained that Babu would be considered for one of the top positions as part of efforts to strengthen the movement ahead of the polls.

“Babu, you are technically in Azimio. Kama munaona huko mnachanganyikiwa, ingia patriotic front tumalize hii kazi. We are amending our party to make it like ODM. There will be a party leader and 4 deputy party leaders. I would wish to give Babu one-party leadership. Hatuna ubaya,” Kalonzo said.

His remarks came after the Embakasi Legislator vouched for the former vice president as the suitable candidate to unseat President William Ruto.

“You must register as a voter so that we disappoint Ruto and appoint Kalonzo because Ruto is busy antagonising this country instead of organising it,” Babu said.

Calls for Kalonzo as an alternative

In his statement, Babu Owino openly pushed for Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka as the alternative to Ruto.

He said Kalonzo is the person he believes can unite the country and fix what he described as poor leadership under the current administration. The MP insisted that the goal should be to prepare early so that when the election comes, the outcome reflects the will of the people.

This comes as Babu expressed doubts on getting an endorsement from his ODM Party to vie for Nairobi governor in 2027.
