Celebrations rocked Mathira constituency on Sunday after Deputy President William Ruto named the area Member of Parliament (MP) Rigathi Gachagua as his running mate in the forthcoming general election.
Gachagua’s supporters, who were following the announcement at a hotel in Karatina town, could not hide their joy once the announcement was made and stormed out of the hotel, sung songs of celebration and went down on their knees to thank God for the good news.
Speaking during a lap of honour to celebrate Gachagua’s appointment, Nyeri County senatorial candidate on United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket Wahome Wamatinga said the choice of Gachagua is a clear testimony that Ruto truly believes in the hustler movement.
“Gachagua just like Ruto comes from a humble background. This is in line with a bottom-up approach where hustlers are uplifted from nowhere to lead this nation. We are now sure that issues of common mwananchi will be dealt with well,” Wahome said.

Wahome said that they were almost losing hope after camping the whole day waiting for the announcement yesterday.
Kareithi Wambui, a youth leader, said that they are sure that issues to do with the young people will be well articulated following the choice of the two who have shown great interest in the youth affairs.
“As the youth, we are sure that our interests are well taken care of. These are young leaders who have the interest of common mwanachi,” Wambui said.
Hundreds of supporters, who had camped at a hotel for two days, joined the convoy bringing business to a halt.
