Peter Mbae: DCP is the alternative govt in waiting
By Ndiritu Wanjiru, May 14, 2026Peter Mbae, the secretary for planning and economic affairs of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), has pledged that the party will establish itself as a strong political force before the next general election, saying that DCP will contest all the elective positions in the country.
Speaking in a morning interview with a local TV station on Thursday, May 14, 2026, Mbae brushed aside the doubts and consternation over the speedy rise of DCP, saying its leader, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, was a man of great influence in the government and state institutions.
“I don’t know why people are shocked about DCP. Our party leader, Gachagua, was the second in command and had control over all institutions of power. DCP is the alternative government in waiting, no doubt,” Mbae said.

The party has already decided to press ahead and not remove or replace candidates for other political groups, the DCP official said, adding that the party plans to be aggressive from the top of the state to the grassroots level.
“As a party, we agreed that we will never step down our candidates for any position in this country, from president all the way to MCA,” he declared.
Mbae’s comments reflect a growing confidence among DCP as it attempts to make itself a top political party, especially in Mt Kenya, where Gachagua has political clout after he disagrees with the Kenya Kwanza government.
Mbae also said that DCP’s leadership was confident that the party was on the verge of rising in the country as it continued to garner support from the public, emphasising an aim to make itself look like a viable political party for Kenyans to choose from.
DCP’s participation in by-elections
Mbae’s statement has come at a time when the Democracy for the Citizens party has consistently shown its presence in participating in by-elections being conducted in the country as the 2027 general election nears.

DCP has fielded a candidate in the Emurua Dikirr constituency, where by-elections are being conducted today, Thursday, May 14, 2026. The DCP candidate is facing off with the candidate from the ruling United Democratic Alliance Party (UDA) in a hotly contested race that has attracted five candidates, with the two parties expected to engage in a political showdown. Mbae has said that the party is going to field candidates from every corner of the country.
“We are going to field candidates in every part of this country,” Mbae said.
