Orengo: Kenya needs stronger Wiper and ODM parties not controlled by anyone
By Mabonga Makhanu, November 6, 2025Siaya Governor James Orengo has said that for a strong nation, the country needs strong parties like the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and the Wiper Patriotic Party.
While speaking at Opoda Farm during a visit by Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, who was there to pay tribute to his late friend and political ally Raila Odinga, Orengo praised the current standing of the Wiper Party, saying that it and ODM have managed to withstand all political storms.
He gave examples of other parties that have long been shed off from the political scene, such as the Party of National Unity (PNU), which was strong in 2007 after the late President Mwai Kibaki used it to ascend to power, but later withered.

He also mentioned the Democratic Party (DP), Jubilee Party, and others, comparing them to the likes of Wiper and ODM, which have continued to remain relevant in the political scene.
He went ahead to concur with Kisumu Woman Representative Ruth Odinga, who recently stated that political parties should not be killed. He urged his ODM party not to be swallowed up by the government, saying that it would be its end, just like other parties.
“I join Ruth in saying let’s not kill political parties na sisi kama ODM msifsnye makosa ya kumezwa, KADU ilimezwa, PNU ilimezwa, DP ilimezwa, and Jubilee karibu imezwe,” he added.
Need for stronger parties
He emphasised that for a stronger Kenya, there is a need to have a strong Wiper and a strong ODM that are not controlled by anyone in power but by the laws of the land.

“For a strong Kenya to come, we need a strong Wiper, but we also need a strong ODM not controlled by anybody in power but by the laws of the land,” Orengo stated.
He also reacted to the events surrounding Raila’s death and post-burial period, saying that many, like him, believed Raila would never die and that he was immortal and would live in perpetuity. But after visiting his grave, he thought otherwise and confirmed that indeed nobody lives forever.
