Siaya Senator James Orengo has called for the revocation of all appointments made following the death of Raila Odinga, terming the move part of the irreducible minimums needed to stabilise the opposition.

Speaking during an interview on K24 TV on May 6, 2026, Orengo argued that the decisions taken in the aftermath of Odinga’s death lacked proper consultation and should be nullified to allow for a more structured reorganisation of the party and coalition.

He further urged the coalition to formally pronounce itself on the recognition of Nairobi senator Edwin Sifuna as secretary general of the Orange Democratic Movement, saying clarity on the party’s leadership was critical at the current juncture.

“The appointments that were made after Raila’s death should be revoked. They should make statements at least about Sifuna that they recognise him as the secretary general of ODM, ” Orengo said.

During the interview, Orengo also insisted that there is no legal document to justify the formation of a broad-based government as claimed by some ODM officials.

Suspension of talks with Ruto

Orengo has also called for the immediate suspension of any ongoing engagements with President William Ruto, insisting that internal party issues must first be resolved before entering into broader political negotiations.

“Any discussions that we have had with Ruto’s government should be suspended until there is a conversation about the way forward. Those would be part of the irreducible minimum,” Orengo stated.

ODM demands respect

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has recently demanded respect from the ruling party, the United Democratic Alliance, slamming senior officials’ public utterances.

In a statement on the official ODM X account on Thursday, April 16, 2026, the party accused select leaders from UDA of causing anxiety and disquiet among ODM members.

“On our relationship with our broad-based partners, the UDA party, the Central Committee noted with concern the goings on and the unwarranted public utterances by some senior officials of the UDA Party aimed at causing anxiety and disquiet among our members,” ODM stated.
