Opposition demands resignations of Opiyo Wandayi and Lee Kinyanjui
By Ndiritu Wanjiru, April 15, 2026The United Alternative Government has called for the resignation of Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi and his trade counterpart Lee Kinyanjui over the fuel importation saga.
Speaking on behalf of the opposition figures on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua called on the two CSs to step aside and allow a proper investigation into the scandal.
“We unequivocally demand the resignation and prosecution of the minister for energy and petroleum, Mr Opiyo Wandayi, for the fuel scandal and lying under oath to the National Assembly committee,” Gachagua demanded.

“We also demand the resignation of Lee Kinyanjui for being complicit and for being part of the scandal,” he added.
Gachagua, in his statement, said that the scandal has increased the cost of living, which is already high, by trying to make the Kenyans the victims of what he has described as mismanagement and lack of accountability in key government ministries.
The opposition leaders also insisted on the openness of the fuel pricing process, and they urged the concerned authorities to release all the information about the recent fuel price changes. They cautioned that not doing anything about those involved would undermine popular confidence in government institutions.

The call from the opposition comes at a time when there is a growing public concern over the increasing fuel prices and news of tainted fuel in some areas in the country, which has elicited an uproar among motorists and industry stakeholders.
The United Alternative Government insisted that the way to regain confidence in the energy and trade industry sector is to hold senior officials responsible and called for prompt enquiries into the issue.
Fuel price surge
The sentiments from the opposition follow the announcement of the fuel price increase by the Energy and Petroleum Regulation Authority (EPRA).
In a press release on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, EPRA released new fuel prices to be in force from April 15 to May 14, 2026.
According to the regulator, the price of Super Petrol has increased by Ksh28.69 per litre, while diesel has gone up by Ksh40.30 per litre.
However, the price of kerosene remains unchanged during the review period.
“In the period under review, the maximum allowed petroleum pump prices for super petrol and diesel increased by Ksh28.69/litre and Ksh40.30/litre, respectively, while the price of kerosene remained unchanged,” EPRA noted.
