Ol Kalou by-election: Ndegwa Njiru offers emotional prayer for DCP-backed candidate as voting begins

By , July 16, 2026

As voting got underway in the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election on Thursday, July 16, 2026, lawyer Ndegwa Njiru delivered an emotional prayer seeking divine intervention, peace and justice while committing Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP)-backed candidate Waweru to God.

In the prayer shared on his X handle, Njiru has asked God to grant the candidate wisdom, courage, humility and favour before the electorate, saying leadership should be guided by integrity, justice and compassion.

Drawing from biblical examples, the lawyer has compared the election to the victories of David over Goliath and Gideon over the Midianites, saying that true victory comes from God rather than political influence, wealth or state power.

“We trust in the name of the Lord our God. Let this election testify that true victory comes not from wealth, influence, intimidation, or the machinery of power, but from Your sovereign will,” part of the prayer read.

Njiru also invoked the stories of Sarah, Hannah, Samson, Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, asking God to remember Kenyans, strengthen those who are discouraged, and ensure that justice prevails during the by-election.

Prayers for peaceful election

The lawyer has prayed for the safety of voters, election officials, observers and security personnel, asking for protection from violence, intimidation and any form of disruption throughout the voting process.

The DCP allied lawyer further appealed for a peaceful election in which every vote would be cast freely, counted honestly and respected faithfully.

“We pray especially for peace throughout this election. Restrain every act of violence, every provocation, every plan to sow chaos or fear. Let justice, fairness, and truth prevail over intimidation and wrongdoing,” he prayed.

Calls for national restoration

Beyond the by-election, Njiru’s prayer extended to the country’s broader political future, calling for the restoration of peace, constitutionalism, the rule of law, accountability and servant leadership.

He concluded by declaring Kenya a nation under God and prayed that righteousness, justice and peace would guide the country’s future.

UDA-DCP showdown

The Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election has attracted significant political attention, with the contest widely seen as a major showdown between the ruling UDA party and the DCP-backed opposition alliance. Polling stations opened at 6 a.m. and are expected to close at 5 p.m., with voters in the queue by the closing time allowed to cast their ballots.
