ODM unveils 2027 strategy following Mombasa retreat
By Cynthia Lodite, May 4, 2026Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has shared resolutions from its Mombasa retreat outlining a strategic path to form Kenya’s next government in 2027, either alone or via coalition, with emphasis on party renewal, candidate scouting, and fair nominations.
In a Press Statement released on Monday, May 4, 2026, after the conclusion of the Party retreat in Mombasa County, ODM announced the Party’s commitment to forming the government in 2027.
“It is the strategic and practical plan of ODM to form the next government either alone or as part of the coalition that forms that government in 2027. These dreams remain valid and remain ours,” ODM said.
In the resolution, the secretariat has been tasked with youth and women leadership development, activating university chapters, voter registration drives, AI integration, affordable data advocacy, and fast-tracking compensation for police brutality victims.
According to the report, ODM has vowed to retain the dream to create jobs for the youth, make the government take care of the poor, the widows and the vulnerable, while also raising the upkeep for the elderly from the current Ksh2000 to Ksh6000 per month.
“ODM still believes in change and reform. Over the decades, we have fought for change and reform from the streets through protests and endless demonstrations. ODM was not formed to seek to form government from the streets, but through democratic means. The time for this is now,” ODM said.

ODM, Govt ties
Meanwhile, ODM has said the party has made a conscious decision that, going forward,it will pursue change and reform from inside the government.
“ODM has decided to be at tables and meetings where decisions that hurt our people are being made and to turn them into decisions that support our people,” ODM announced.
“We agree that to be at the table and in the room where decisions on our people are being made, we have to organise ourselves to have the numbers and the people,” ODM said.
The Party further noted that this historic retreat has therefore focused on organisational renewal of the party and preparation for contests between now and 2027 and that the people remain at the centre of ODM plans.
“At this retreat, ODM said it has covered much ground on ways to effectively deal with new tendencies, how to enhance membership recruitment, the identification and recruitment of potential bearers of the party ticket,” the Party explained.
Further adding the enhancement of party ideology and identity, expansion of party support base, improving relationship with the masses and grassroots networks, leveraging our members serving in government and preparing for the 2027 elections.
