Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has revealed the action he is going to take against the Orange Party Members of Parliament (MPs) who voted for Finance Bill 2024 to aid it sail through the Second Reading.

Sifuna in a statement issued through X on Thursday, June 20, 2024, said he will be recommending to the ODM Party National Executive Committee (NEC) the action that should be taken.

Recall of MPs

The Nairobi County Senator says his recommendations to the ODM NEC will include a proposal to initiate recalls in the constituencies held by some of the MPs who supported the Finance Bill 2024 during the voting process.

"As SG of ODM I will be recommending to the Party NEC that we initiate recalls in one or two constituencies held by some of those who went against the wishes of the People," Sifuna stated.

In his statement, Sifuna applauded the 115 MPs who voted against the Finance Bill 2024.

He said he would leave the 205 MPs who voted yes to send the Bill to the next stage, to be dealt with by the young generation of Kenyans who are on the streets demonstrating against the Bill.

"I celebrate the 115 Patriots who heeded the call of Kenyans and voted against the Finance Bill 2024. Know their names. As to the 204 who voted yes, I will leave to our new overlords, Gen Z, to do with as they please," Sifuna said.

Bondo MP Gideon Ochanda is one of the notable ODM lawmakers who voted for the Finance Bill 2024 in its Second Reading stage.

Controversial Bill

The controversial Finance Bill 2024 passed the second reading in the National Assembly Thursday amid street protests in Nairobi and other major towns.

The Bill sailed through with 204 votes in favour and 115 against in what has angered Kenyans across the country, mainly the youth who have been on the streets since Tuesday, June 18, 2024.

The bill, which has been a subject of intense debate and public outcry, aims to introduce new tax measures to raise additional revenue for the government’s budget.

Opposition protest

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino said Thursday’s events are a clear indication of the government’s disregard for the voice of the people.

As the bill proceeds to the next stage of the legislative process, the opposition coalition, Azimio La Umoja, has vowed to continue its efforts to challenge the proposed tax measures.

They argue that the bill disproportionately affects the poor and fails to address the root causes of Kenya’s economic challenges.
