ODM condemns attack on Senator Osotsi, demands arrests

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has strongly condemned the attack on Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi, describing it as a serious incident that threatens political tolerance and safety.

In a statement on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, ODM Chairperson and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga raised concern over rising cases of violence targeting leaders and called for calm as investigations continue into the shocking

The party condemned the attack in the strongest terms, describing it as both criminal and unacceptable in a democratic society where leaders should feel safe.

“The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) strongly condemns the cowardly and criminal attack on Vihiga Senator, Hon. Godfrey Osotsi, in Kisumu earlier today,” the statement reads.

Wanga went on to reaffirm ODM’s political values, stating clearly that the party does not support violence, intimidation, or coercion in any form of political engagement.

“ODM is not a party of intimidation, coercion, or political violence. Our movement is founded on the principles of social democracy, pluralism, and constitutionalism. The ODM Party Constitution explicitly commits us to the protection of human rights and the eradication of tribalism, sectionalism, harassment and oppression. It further mandates the party to defend the freedom of expression and the human dignity of every Kenyan,” Wanga wrote.

She further explained that these values are not just words, but the foundation upon which the party was built over many years of struggle for democracy and openness.

“These are not abstract ideals but are the very values upon which ODM was built through years of struggle. Our party has consistently stood for an open society where citizens and leaders alike are free to speak, organise, and differ without fear. Kenya’s Constitution equally protects the right of every citizen to make political choices. Any attack on a leader because of his views or associations is an attack on the very democratic space Kenyans fought so hard to win. Violence is never an acceptable response to political contestation,” the statement reads.

The ODM chairperson also took a moment to send a message of support to Senator Osotsi and his family during this difficult time.

“We wish Senator Osotsi a quick and full recovery. We stand in solidarity with him, his family, and all those who believe in peaceful engagement,” the statement reads.

Wanga went on to call on security agencies to act quickly and ensure those behind the attack are arrested and held accountable under the law.

“We call upon the National Police Service to move swiftly and decisively to identify, arrest, and prosecute all those responsible for this cowardly act. Political violence must never be normalised or rewarded,” the statement reads.

Wanga concluded by cautioning against blaming the people of Kisumu for the incident, urging Kenyans to avoid profiling communities over actions committed by individuals.

“At the same time, this shameful incident must not be used to stigmatise the people of Kisumu. Criminal acts are committed by individuals and should be treated as such; they must not become a pretext for profiling an entire city or community,” she concluded.
