By Luke Oluoch, October 27, 2025The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has unanimously resolved to remain under the broad-based government, an arrangement entered into by its late party leader, Raila Odinga, on March 7, 2025.
Speaking shortly after the Central Committee Meeting on Monday, October 27, 2025, Secretary General Edwin Sifuna revealed that the Chungwa party would continue its association with the ruling party, United Democratic Alliance (UDA), under President William Ruto.
“As top leadership of this party, we reiterated the commitment of the party to the broad-based government until 2027. a relationship guided by the 10-point agenda entered for the sake of peace and stability of the country,” he stated.
Sifuna also revealed the party had equal commitment to honour its departed leader’s legacy by working towards keeping the outfit united.
“We shall pursue all causes that Raila dedicated to and do everything within our power to uphold the unity of the party and apply lessons learnt from our departed leader and comrade in the service of the people of Kenya, whom he loved and fought for,” he added.
Sifuna’s sentiments echo those of Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma, who reaffirmed the party’s commitment to working with Ruto’s government.
Party leader
The foregoing comes after the party formally endorsed Senator Oburu Oginga as the new party leader following the death of Raila Odinga.
The committee, which Secretary General Edwin Sifuna is a member, described the endorsement as a unifying decision meant to preserve party stability and ensure a smooth transition during what it termed as one of the most difficult moments in the party’s two-decade history.
“The party remains strong and steadfast in all its obligations and will rise stronger from adversity. This being the first meeting of the committee since the passing of the Party Leader, the top party organ resolved as follows: That we endorse Hon. Dr Oburu Oginga as the new party leader,” a statement released after the meeting read in part.
According to the press statement signed by Sifuna, the Central Committee urged all ODM members, officials, and supporters across the country to accord Oburu full support and cooperation.
The party said his leadership will be critical in keeping ODM united and focused on the mission and vision established by Raila Odinga, who led the movement for over 20 years.
“And urge the party rank and file to accord him all the necessary support and cooperation to enable him to guide the party through this difficult time,” the statement added.
