Nyeri Senator Wamatinga rubbishes Kalonzo overtures
Nyeri Senator Wahome Wamatinga has dismissed claims that Mt Kenya region owes any political debt to former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, stating that no such agreement exists.
Wamatinga yesterday asserted that the region remains firmly committed to President William Ruto’s administration.
“When someone says that this region is politically indebted to Kalonzo, it is misleading because we have never had any agreement with him,” Wamatinga said.
“If former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua feels the need to pursue a personal political alliance with Kalonzo, that is his constitutional right. However, as a community, we will not be sold elsewhere,” he added.
The Senator’s remarks came in response to statements made by ex-DP Gachagua during his recent tour of the Ukambani region, where he hinted at potential political realignments.
Wamatinga, however, emphasized that the Mt Kenya region’s political allegiance lies with the Ruto administration.
“We fought hard to form this government, which today is led by President William Ruto and Deputy President Kithure Kindiki,” he said.
“This government has seven Cabinet Secretaries and a Deputy President from our region. We have no justification to walk away from it.”
Wamatinga added that the region would continue to support the Kenya Kwanza government in the 2027 General Elections.
“In 2027, we will organize ourselves politically as residents of the Mt Kenya region. But we will not follow any individual blindly,” he said.
Nyeri Town MP Duncan Mathenge urged the community to prioritize development over early political campaigns.
“Matters pertaining to elections will be addressed in 2027. As we approach 2025, let us focus on development and evaluate our leaders based on their actions, distinguishing those who tell the truth from those who lie,” Mathenge said.
Thuo Mathenge, the national leader of The National Democrats (TND) party, called on Mt Kenya residents to unite under a regional political party ahead of the next elections.
“We should not hang our political jacket in someone else’s house. This region should go into the 2027 elections with its own political party. The TND party is already in place, and we should use it to safeguard our community’s interests,” Thuo said.
Thuo warned against any attempts to sell the region’s political loyalty to ‘outsiders’.
“We will not allow ourselves to be sold out to Ukambani or any other region,” he declared,” Thuo said.
The leaders were speaking yesterday during the burial of Mzee Wanjohi Murimi, father to Apostle Joseph Murimi of Blessed Church of Christ Fellowship in Karundu village, Mukurwe-ini Constituency, Nyeri County.
The event brought together various leaders who reiterated their commitment to preserving the political and economic interests of the vote-rich region within the framework of the current government.
And speaking in the neighboring Murang’a county, government officials who had attended the burial of Joseph Njenga, father to Adrian Kamotho who is one of the President Ruto’s lawyers asked residents to support the government in order to help it deliver it’s promises to them.
Led by the Economic Council Advisor Moses Kuria and Deputy State House Comptroller Simon Gikuru, they said if president William Ruto succeeds in his plan to steer the country to greater heights the benefits will be for all.
