Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s ardent supporter, Nuru Okanga, has donated two guinea fowls to the late leader’s family during his condolence visit to Opoda Farm.

Nuru Okanga, who is eyeing the Member of County Assembly (MCA) seat for Kolera Ward in Kakamega County, led a delegation from his constituency on Wednesday, November 5, 2025. The group, made up of family and friends, visited Opoda Farm to pay tribute to the man Okanga credits for his current political clout.

Visiting Kang’o ka jaramogi

Just like other leaders who have been visiting the family of the late Raila Odinga, some donating herds of cattle, especially those from western Kenya, Okanga ensured he was not left behind and donated guinea fowl as part of his condolence gesture.

Okanga, dressed in full Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) attire, had a plant-like ornament draped around his neck, symbolising his role as the head of the delegation and his readiness to take up leadership.

Carrying a fly whisk, as Raila often did in his prime, Okanga marched into Opoda Farm while chanting “Jowi! Jowi!” (meaning buffalo), a slogan that has become synonymous with Raila’s mourning period.

He proceeded to the gravesite, where he took a moment of silence with his wife and friends beside him before laying a wreath on the late leader’s grave.

He later met Raila Odinga’s widow, Ida Odinga, who received him and his delegation, and they took photos together.

Okanga’s dissatisfaction with Raila’s burial

This visit comes days after Nuru Okanga vowed to file a petition seeking the retrieval of Raila’s hat and fly whisk, which were buried alongside him. In a movement called “Raila Is Still Breathing”, Okanga insisted that Raila’s burial went against traditional customs.

According to Okanga, Odinga appeared to him in a dream, prompting him to take action regarding the burial items.

“Last night, I had a dream.  Baba Raila Amolo Odinga himself appeared to me, standing tall, glowing like morning light on Lake Victoria. He looked at me and said, “Okanga, my son, this tie is choking me. I can’t rest. And my hats, the ones I loved, are buried with me. Retrieve them for the people,” Okanga stated.

“To remove the tight tie choking Baba Raila Odinga and rescue his favourite hats from the coffin after he appeared to me in a dream,” he added.
