Ex-Cabinet Minister and former Attorney General Justin Muturi has questioned the custodianship of the Interior Ministry by Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, indicating that a more experienced hand is needed in the docket since it is the key to the coordination of national security, internal administration and emergency response systems.

Speaking in an interview with Kameme TV on Monday, April 13, 2026, Muturi, the leader of the Democratic Party (DP), has claimed that among the main mistakes in the current government is what he believes is the delegation of very sensitive state duties to leaders who he believes are relatively unfit to take up the responsibilities.

“The biggest mistake that William Ruto made was to appoint Kipchumba Murkomen to the Ministry of Interior. He is very young for the docket,” Muturi said.

The sentiments of Muturi are that the Interior Ministry is such a portfolio that cannot be well handled without a lot of experience in the field of governance and public administration, since it has direct oversight over police services, county security coordination, and national cohesion structures.

He also suggested that Ruto could have erred on his part in appointments, saying that the most critical state institutions, like the Interior Ministry, require leaders with enhanced institutional recollection and wider grounding in administration.

The assertions of Muturi have come at a time when the Ministry of Interior has been faulted for allowing the use of political goons to disrupt political gatherings by the opposition. Members of the United Opposition have been calling for the resignation of Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen over failure to stop the trend.

Murkomen warns leaders using gangs

In contrast, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has raised concerns over rising political violence, warning that the country risks sliding into chaos if leaders continue to tolerate the use of gangs and intimidation ahead of the 2027 elections.

Speaking at Kabarak in Nakuru County on Friday, April 10, 2026, during the burial of the late Mitchelle Jelimo Kemboi, the daughter of Captain William Ruto, Managing Director of Kenya Ports Authority, Murkomen addressed recent incidents of violence and urged political leaders across the political divide to take responsibility for the actions of their supporters.

Murkomen called on leaders to abandon violent tactics in politics, stressing that elections should not be associated with fear, intimidation, or the use of criminal groups.
