Murkomen blames goons for All Saints Cathedral attack, says persons of interest arrested
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has linked the recent attack at All Saints Cathedral in Nairobi to what he called rising cases of “goonism” involving actors across the political divide.
In a statement posted on his official X account on Sunday, June 14, 2026, Murkomen said the country remains generally safe and secure, but warned that organised violence by groups hired for disruption is becoming a serious security concern.
“Even as the country remains safe and secure, goonism perpetrated by actors across the political divide continues to pose a challenge, as witnessed in the recent unfortunate incident at All Saints Cathedral,” Murkomen said.
The attack at All Saints Cathedral on June 12, 2026, disrupted a post-budget dialogue meeting organised by civil society groups. CCTV footage later showed groups of claimed attackers storming the church compound in separate waves before forcing their way into the meeting venue.
Security agencies have since confirmed arrests linked to the incident, with investigations still ongoing. Murkomen said more are being pursued.
“Several suspects have been arrested and our security agencies are pursuing more. We will ensure that those involved are brought to book and held accountable,” he said.
Security response and arrests
Murkomen said police are working to strengthen law enforcement operations in Nairobi following the incident. He noted that authorities are reviewing the city’s security structure to improve coordination and response.
He announced the formation of a new Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit, which he said will help address emerging security threats in the capital. He also said the government will introduce more technology-driven systems to support policing and public order.
Murkomen added that the reforms aim to improve how police respond to organised disruptions in public spaces, including places of worship and civic venues.
The Interior CS also outlined plans to strengthen community policing by formally involving village elders in grassroots governance.
He said the government will provide village elders with a monthly stipend starting in the next financial year as part of efforts to improve local security coordination and early warning systems.

Murkomen said the move will help bridge gaps between citizens and security agencies, especially in identifying and preventing criminal activity at the community level.
He made the remarks while also attending Sunday service at AIC Plainsview in Nairobi, where the church marked its Golden Jubilee celebrations.
He praised the church for its 50 years of service, saying religious institutions continue to play an important role in shaping values and supporting community development.
“We commend the church for 50 years of faithful service, its contributions to socio-economic development, and its role in shaping generations of responsible citizens,” he said.
His comments come at a time when religious leaders and civil society organisations have raised concern over increasing incidents of violence targeting public gatherings, including places of worship.
Growing concern over goonism
Recent incidents, including the All Saints Cathedral attack, have triggered public debate on the rise of organised groups used to disrupt meetings and intimidate participants in civic spaces.
The National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) and the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) have both condemned such incidents, calling for stronger accountability and protection of constitutional rights.
Security agencies say investigations into the All Saints Cathedral incident remain active, with more arrests expected as CCTV analysis continues.
Murkomen said the government will act firmly against all those involved, regardless of political affiliation.
“We will ensure that those involved are brought to book and held accountable,” he said.
