Murang’a catholic bishop asks Kenyans to mark all incompetent leaders ahead of 2027
By Wangari Njuguna, December 30, 2025Murang’a Catholic Diocesan Bishop Maria Wainaina has urged members of the public to be keen on the kind of leaders they will elect in the 2027 General Election.
Wainaina said a majority of incumbent leaders have failed to deliver on their promises and therefore do not deserve another term in office, noting that they lack commitment to serving the people.
Speaking during celebrations to mark the end of the church calendar at St Mary’s Cathedral in Murang’a on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, the bishop said voters should understand that leaders who have failed to deliver in the past are likely to do the same if re-elected.
Call for responsible voting
“We should mark all the leaders who have failed in delivering their promises to the people and make sure they do not get those positions again,” Wainaina said.
“People should not be lured into electing leaders who lack capacity and accountability,” he added.

The bishop noted that as the 2027 general election draws closer, politicians will intensify campaigns to woo voters, cautioning the public to carefully discern between leaders with genuine intentions and those offering empty promises.
He also warned that cash handouts and donations should not influence voters’ decisions, saying such acts are often used as traps by politicians to buy votes.
“The money given is too little for one to overlook a good leader and elect the wrong one,” he remarked.
“We are responsible for the kind of leadership we elect, and that is why it is important that we only pick those who will fight for our interests,” the bishop added.
Church’s role in leadership accountability
Wainaina further urged elected leaders to be accountable and ensure they deliver on their promises, stressing the importance of servant leadership.
“Any elected leader should know they have a responsibility to serve the people because that is why they vied for those positions,” he said.
He also said the church will continue playing its role in holding the government and leaders to account, ensuring that things are done the right way.
In addition, the bishop noted that the church will educate the public on making good leadership choices and the key qualities to look for in individuals seeking elective office.
“The church has a role to play both to the leaders and the people, to give direction to both parties,” he said.
