Munya reaffirms his position in opposition in scathing attack on Ruto’s govt

By , December 14, 2025

Former Meru Governor Peter Munya has openly declared that he is in the opposition, sharpening divisions in the region as leaders take opposing sides ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Munya made his position clear while speaking in Meru County on Sunday, December 14, 2025.

“We are members of the Wantam Movement and we do not speak out of fear. It is the Constitution of Kenya that determines whether we vote for a candidate or withhold our vote,” Munya said.

He spoke at Holy Family Athiru Ruujine Catholic Parish in Ntunene Ward, Igembe North Sub-County, Meru County, where he presided over a ceremony marking fifteen years of priestly service by Rev. Fr. Peter Gitonga Njeru. Munya praised the priest for his commitment to the Church and the community, but quickly turned to politics in his address to the congregation.

Criticise national and county government

Munya launched a strong attack on both national and county leadership, accusing them of poor management, broken promises, and failure to protect citizens’ welfare. He said the cost of living remains high, opportunities remain limited, and ordinary wananchi continue to suffer despite repeated government assurances. He also pointed to widening inequality and the continued marginalisation of many communities in Kenya.

During the same address, Munya confirmed that he will contest the Meru governorship in 2027. He said his campaign will focus on fair development, institutional reform, social justice, and accountable leadership. He promised to restore order in county administration and ensure public resources serve residents, not political interests.

Ruto allies threaten split

Munya’s opposition stance places him on a direct collision course with other Mount Kenya East leaders who currently support President Ruto. Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku and Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire have declared loyalty to the Kenya Kwanza government and have threatened to split the Mount Kenya region politically.

Speaking at Full Gospel Church in Kangaru, Embu County, Ruku said Mount Kenya East will no longer accept being tied to a wider Mount Kenya voting bloc dominated by leaders from the west of the region. He accused Gachagua of pushing anti-Ruto politics and warned residents against what he described as a coordinated effort to turn them against the president.

“We will divide the mountain if we must. Mount Kenya East will stand alone,” Ruku said, arguing that the region must protect its own political and economic interests. He defended the Ruto administration, citing improved coffee and tea prices as proof of government support for farmers.
