Mt Kenya tycoons to host Maa leaders
By Eric.Wainaina, January 25, 2022Members of the monied Mt Kenya Foundation (MKF) will today host leaders from the Maa community to rally support for ODM leader Raila Odinga’s presidential candidature.
Expected at the meeting, to be held at the Safari Park hotel in Nairobi, will be politicians and opinion shapers from Kajiado, Narok, Samburu, Laikipia and Baringo counties.
Today’s meeting was initially scheduled to take place on January 13, 2022 but was postponed to pave way for a luncheon President Uhuru Kenyatta hosted for pro-Azimio La Umoja MPs at State House, Nairobi to thank them for passing the Political Parties (Amendment) Bill.
Joe Murimi, the foundation’s Director of Communications told People Daily that the tycoons will use the meeting to rally the pastoralist communities to back Raila’s candidature in a move geared towards reversing the gains made by Deputy President William Ruto in the Maa region.
“The talks will revolve around issues touching on the economic and political interests of the Mt Kenya and Maa regions. We are neighbours because we share counties such Laikipia, Kajiado, Kiambu, Nakuru and Narok. There will also be discussions on the support for Azimio La Umoja and Raila’s presidential bid,” Murimi said yesterday.
Common political stand Today’s is the sixth meeting the foundation is hosting since September last year to chart the political direction the Mt Kenya region should take in the 2022 election.
The group has already held three meetings with Raila, culminating in its endorsement of his candidature. It has also hosted political leaders from the Arid and Semi-Arid Lands counties on November 10, 2021 in which a common political stand on Raila’s political candidature was taken.
During the last meeting that was held on December 8, and which saw Raila endorsed as the group’s preferred presidential candidate, the foundation’s chairman Peter Munga promised to host leaders from Ukambani region and Maa community and rally them behind ODM chief’s candidature.
