Deputy President William Ruto has on Saturday, April 9, 2022, announced that Senator Johnson Sakaja will be Kenya Kwanza’s flagbearer in the Nairobi gubernatorial race.

The second-in-command stated that the alliance arrived at the decision following intense talks and deliberations amongst aspirants affiliated with the nascent coalition.

Ruto also announced that Bishop Margaret Wanjiru, who was also eyeing the city’s top job, will instead vie for the city’s senatorial seat.

The presidential hopeful further expressed gratitude to the former Starehe MP for giving up her gubernatorial ambitions in favour of Sakaja.

Speaking at the presser, Bishop Wanjiru avowed her support for Sakaja’s bid and vowed to campaign for him.

“In politics, It comes a time when one must give and take. That is exactly what has taken place here. Today I chose to step down for Sakaja in the Nairobi Governor race,” she said.

Senator Sakaja urged supporters of the former Starehe MP to rally behind his candidature since they are now on the same train.

“The most important thing now is to keep in mind that we are one team. I want to urge my supporters to now rally behind Bishop Wanjiru, who was sacrificed so much for us, and back her senate bid,” the lawmaker stated.
