Malala: Wetang’ula has become Ruto’s spanner boy
By Mabonga Makhanu, May 22, 2026Former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala has come out, launching a scathing attack on National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, terming him as President William Ruto’s ‘spanner boy’.
While speaking during a morning show on Friday, the outspoken Democracy for Citizens (DCP) deputy party leader lashed out at Wetang’ula, saying that he is the most incompetent Speaker in the history of Kenya.
He said his point of frustration is that when Kenyans are grappling with high fuel prices, instead of the National Assembly Speaker convening a special sitting and calling parliamentarians from recess, he has remained silent and allowed things to get out of hand.
He also took issue with Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, who was seen on Thursday, May 21, 2026, in the company of President William Ruto, gracing an event on the Coast, saying that Kingi is also a disappointment, adding that instead of convening the Senate to address critical national issues, he is busy associating with the President.
“Wetang’ula is the most incompetent National Assembly speaker we have ever heard; he has become a spanner boy for Ruto,” he said.
Gachagua lashes out at Wetang’ula

This also comes days after former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, during a funeral in Ol Kalou, launched a similar attack on the National Assembly Speaker, saying that he has become a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) youth winger instead of executing his constitutional role as the third in command.
According to Gachagua, the Speaker has repeatedly contravened Standing Order No. 55, which prohibits discussing a person who is not a member of the National Assembly in Parliament. For such a discussion to take place, a substantive motion must first be moved.
“I want to draw your attention to studying Order Number 51: that to discuss somebody who does not sit in the National Assembly, there must be a substantive motion. It requires that a member deliver a written, signed motion approved by the speaker before it is placed on the order paper for debate,” Gachagua stated.
Gachagua faults Ichung’wah

He continued to express his frustrations, saying that this has not been the case, as he has been mentioned in Parliament over five times.
He took particular issue with Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah, accusing him of discussing him in Parliament with the speaker’s approval, saying that a substantive motion is required under the standing orders for such discussions to occur.
Gachagua further challenged the Speaker, asking why he has allowed the House to discuss him repeatedly, telling him that he has let the National Assembly down.
