Political analyst Prof Makau Mutua has called on Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to resign for advancing ethnic politics.

In a statement on X, Mutua says Gachagua was elected on a national ticket and hence should never be seen advancing ethnic politics, instead should advocate for national unity.

"No one elected on a national ticket should spend all his time and taxpayer money fighting for domination of his own ETHNIC group. DP Rigathi Gachagua must decide if he’s DP of Kenya — the entire country — or the village chief of Mt Kenya. If it’s the latter, he should resign as DP," Mutua stated.

Gachagua's vow

This comes moments after Gachagua announced that he would not cease from advocating for the unity of the Mt Kenya region, his backyard.

According to the second in command, communities should be free to meet and speak in one voice to enhance their political and social interests to have a share of the national cake.

“I don’t see why someone should have a problem with the unity of a region because other regions have their own peculiar interest which cannot be discussed on a national level so if we discuss our own issues as a region, why would one try to isolate us because of being unified?” Gachagua posed.

“I have seen Western Kenya, North Eastern and other regions uniting and discussing their development issues. What's wrong with Mt Kenya doing the same so we should have a bottom-up model of unity from region to the country?”

Gachagua spoke at Our Lady of Visitation Timau Catholic church in Meru County on Sunday, June 2, 2024.

Speaking in Limuru on Friday, May 31, 2024, Gachagua said Mt Kenya leaders were misled to attack retired President Uhuru Kenyatta, noting that he has since realised that it was wrong.

"We were misled, we attacked and shouted down President Uhuru. I requested forgiveness, did you forgive me? Never again will we attack our leader. Do not stab your brother in the back. That is why I personally went live on TV and Radio to seek forgiveness from our son Uhuru Kenyatta for attacking him during the campaigns. We acknowledge our mistake. The bad thing would be to repeat the mistake," Gachagua stated.

This comes even as it emerges that President William Ruto and his deputy could have fallen out, leading to a war of words involving their allies.

However, the two have downplayed their differences insisting that all is well.
