Makau Mutua scolds Gathoni Wamuchomba over tribal politics remarks
By Joel Masibo, December 28, 2025Senior advisor to President William Ruto on constitutional affairs, Makau Mutua, has criticised Githunguri Member of Parliament (MP) Gathoni Wamuchomba over what he terms as tribal politics remarks.
Taking to X on Sunday, December 28, 2025, Mutua reacted to Wamuchomba’s declaration that the Gikuyu community has decided not to back President William Ruto’s re-election bid in 2027 despite his efforts to consolidate the Central Kenya votes.
In a recent interview, Wamuchomba argued that once the Gikuyu community decides to take a common path, they follow it to the end, insisting that Ruto’s attempts to win back their support will definitely hit a snag in the next general election after a perceived fallout with the people of Mount Kenya.
Ruto rejected
”We are that community that once we make a decision that we do not want you, even if you marry someone from us, we will come to your wedding, but still we will reject you. That is how we behave. I already know what the ground is saying: take Kabogo, Kagwe, Gathoni, Waiguru, all of them. Mount Kenya is not with you. We have decided we are going to change the narrative of our politics. We are not going to support President William Samoei Ruto again. Even if he brings whatever he is bringing in Central, he will do it, we will laugh, but we are not with him,” Wamuchomba said in the interview.

In response to her sentiments, Makau Mutua said: ”Very unfortunate remarks from a leader with national visibility. It’s this tribal, bigoted, and entitled siege mentality that has retarded Kenya’s development. Are the Kikuyu a herd of sheep without individual brains who can think for themselves? Cry, my beloved country,”
Courting Mount Kenya
Speaking on the development in the Mount Kenya region, Wamuchomba has welcomed the Cabinet’s approval of the dualisation of Muthaiga-Kiambu Road, but with a sense of scepticism.
Shortly after the approval on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, the legislator, however, hoped that it would not turn out to be a mere promise, as such pledges have been made before without implementation.
”Cabinet communication about the 23.5 km Kiambu road dualling approval is a good gesture. Will only believe it when it’s completed. Same cabinet approved Cherry advance funds for coffee farmers, and they were never sent in full to date. Tumezoea promises; tutaamini ikimalizwa. In the meantime, Singapore’s dream is still valid,” Wamuchomba took to X.
