Makau Mutua explains why Sifuna should leave ODM

By , June 29, 2026

Senior Advisor of Constitutional Affairs in the Office of the President, Professor Makau Mutua, has advised Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna to leave the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

He argues that the Nairobi Senator should not continue fighting a party he no longer appears to believe in.

Mutua advises Sifuna

During an interview with a local TV station on Sunday, June 28, 2026, Mutua said Sifuna should stop wasting time in ODM.

In strongly worded remarks, Mutua accused the Nairobi senator of turning against the same party that elevated him politically.

“I don’t understand why Sifuna is fighting to keep on sucking on Mama’s tit of ODM. He should get the hell out. He should not waste time there; he does not like the party. ODM will outlast him. Sifuna was picked by Baba from political obscurity and made the SG of the party.”

“His ingratitude is wrangling. He is a young man; he should be humble, and he should learn how to conduct himself. You cannot go to a political party like that and start threatening it when you are only two days old in the party,” Mutua said.

Mutua’s remarks come amid renewed tension inside ODM following the party’s latest move to remove Sifuna from the Secretary-General position.

Osotsi advises Sifuna

Mutua’s position appears to echo, in a different tone, recent remarks by Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi, who also advised Sifuna against returning to court to fight for the ODM Secretary-General seat.

Speaking during a funeral ceremony in Emmabwi, Emuhaya Constituency, Vihiga County, on Friday, June 26, Osotsi said he would personally speak to Sifuna and urge him to abandon the legal battle.

According to Osotsi, ODM had changed after the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, whom many in the opposition still refer to as Baba.

“Ile kitu nataka kuambia Sifuna ni kwamba mimi mlinichagua nikiwa ndani ya chama cha ODM, Sifuna pia ndani ya chama cha ODM. Lakini tangu Baba akufe, hii ODM imeonyesha sisi madharau,” Osotsi said.

The Vihiga senator further claimed that ODM had frustrated Sifuna despite an earlier court decision that questioned the legality of his first removal.

Wacha iende,” Osotsi added.

Sifuna rejects ouster

Osotsi’s comments followed a statement issued by Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi team on June 23, 2026, rejecting ODM’s latest decision to remove him from office.

The team argued that ODM’s National Executive Committee had repeated what it described as an unfair and unconstitutional process similar to the one previously challenged in court.

“Late last evening, we were made aware of the decision by the ODM Party NEC purporting, for the second time, to remove the SG Hon. Edwin Sifuna from office.

“On the face of it, the decision bears similarities with the first one in February; unprocedural, unfair and contrary to the party’s constitution,” the statement read.

His legal team further indicated that it would move back to court to challenge the latest ouster.

ODM, through interim Secretary-General Catherine Omanyo, defended the decision, saying the NEC had adopted recommendations from the party’s Internal Dispute Resolution Committee.

“After going through the report and the findings, the NEC unanimously resolved to adopt the committee’s recommendation and endorsed the removal from office of Senator Edwin Watenya Sifuna,” Omanyo said.

By the time of publication, Sifuna had not publicly responded to Mutua’s latest remarks.

The growing pressure from both Mutua and Osotsi now places Sifuna at a political crossroads: fight for his place in ODM, walk away from the party, or use the dispute to build a broader national profile outside ODM.
