Lobby group wants Kembi barred from vying for Murang’a senator’s seat

A lobby group has moved to court seeking orders to bar former Communication Authority chair Kembi Gitura from vying for the Murang’a senator’s seat.

International Policy Group has protested the move by the Jubilee party to clear Gitura to vie for the seat despite him being implicated in a graft case.

In a press release seen by People Daily, the group’s Chairman Kenneth Otieno said Kembi was implicated in the multi-billion Kenya Medical Supplies Agency where he was serving as the board’s chair hence should not have been cleared to vie in the coming elections.

“The Public Investment Committee called for further investigations and asked the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission to investigate him with intent to prefer charges of violating the public officers and ethics Act” the statement read in part.

“PIC and health committee of the national assembly, as well as the Senate Health Committee, also undertook parallel investigations into the matter and they all implicated Kembi” the statement added.

Otieno said the Jubilee Party went ahead to clear the aspirant in total disregard of the matter thus breaching chapter six of the constitution.

He said as a direct consequence of the scandal, Kembi should is not fit to run for any office.

Further, he said the party hoodwinked the public and applied double standards on this issue pointing out that it rejected the application by Ann Ngirita who was allegedly involved in the NYS scandal.

The case which has been filed at the High Court is set to come up for mention on 20th April 2022.

EACC and IEBC have been enlisted as respondents alongside the Jubilee party.
