List of politicians who died in 2022

The country was, in 2022, hit by a series of deaths of famous personalities, and in this article, we take a look at prominent and aspiring politicians who left us in 2022.
Mwai Kibaki
Former Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki, who served as the country’s third president died on April 22, 2022, at the age of 90.
Kibaki is remembered for seeing through the Kenya’s 2010 constitution, improving social services and setting the country on a path of economic growth. One of his biggest achievements was the introduction of free primary education.
William Chepkut
Former Ainabkoi Member of Parliament (MP) William Chepkut died on Saturday, October 8, 2022.
Family sources said the former legislator collapsed in his house in Nairobi and was rushed to Mediheal Hospital in Parklands where he was pronounced dead.
His situation got worse after he was involved in two accidents in September 2021 and was admitted to Mediheal Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for at least a month.
The public only got to know about his hospitalization in November after several politicians visited him at the hospital and posted photos on social media.
It was not clear if his death was linked to the injuries he suffered in the accidents.
He served as the MP for the Ainabkoi constituency between 2017 and 2022 after he was elected as an independent candidate.
However, his bid to defend the seat as an independent candidate in the August 2022 general elections flopped when Samwel Chepkonga of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party won the seat.
Charles Kipng’ok
Baringo County Deputy Governor Charles Kipng’ok died at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on September 14, 2022, en route to Mombasa for the induction workshop for governors that had been organised by Council of Governors (COG).
The newly elected deputy governor was confirmed dead by medical personnel at JKIA while the aircraft was still on the ground.
“Kenya Airways PLC(“KQ”), regrets to announce that a passenger developed breathing difficulties this evening while boarding KQ612 that was scheduled to depart for Mombasa at 1900hours,” read part of the statement by Kenya Airways.
Farid Swaleh
Mombasa businessman-cum politician Farid Swaleh died at his home in Nyali on June 26, 2022. Until his demise, Swaleh was serving as a Democratic Action Party (DAP) Coast region coordinator.
He served as the Jubilee party’s Coast region coordinator before switching camp to DAP-K.
The politician vied for the Mombasa senatorial seat on a Jubilee party ticket in the 2017 polls but lost to Senator Mohammed Faki of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party.
William Kamoti
The former Rabai MP William Kamoti perished in a road accident shortly after he presented his nomination papers to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
Kamoti died on the spot after being involved in the fatal crash that happened when a Toyota Prado he was travelling on lost control and rolled several times.
The tragic accident happened on the night of May 29, 2022, along Mombasa/Malindi highway in Mnarani area of Kilifi county.
Wesley Kibet Kogo
The former Nandi Hills parliamentary aspirant Wesley Kibet Kogo died in a grisly road accident on Thursday, April 7, 2022 after a public service vehicle he was travelling in rammed into another at Kangemi area along Waiyaki way in Nairobi.
Kogo popularly known as ‘Tingeet’ was headed for a morning show at the Kalenjin vernacular station Kass FM.
He was vying for the seat on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket.
