Kivutha Kibwana identifies 4 opposition camps taking shape ahead of 2027
By Mustafa Juma, March 8, 2026Former Makueni County Governor Kivutha Kibwana has outlined what he described as emerging political formations in Kenya as the country gradually shifts focus toward the 2027 General Election.
Taking to his official X account on Sunday, March 8, 2026, Kibwana said Kenya’s evolving political landscape is beginning to crystallise into distinct alliances involving both government-aligned figures and multiple opposition factions.
According to him, the first formation is what he termed the “Singapore Alliance”, which linked with President William Ruto and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Oburu Odinga.
Kibwana suggested that the alliance represents a governing coalition that has emerged following recent political realignments in the country.
Beyond that grouping, he said a broader opposition coalition appears to be taking shape, comprising several political factions and movements.
United Opposition
He identified the first bloc within the opposition as the United Opposition, which he associated with leaders such as former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) and Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

Linda Mwananchi movement
The second faction, according to Kibwana, is the Linda Mwananchi movement, which is linked to political leaders including Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, Embakasi East Member of Parliament (MP) Babu Owino, and Siaya Governor James Orengo.

People’s Opposition Alliance
Kibwana further identified a third grouping he described as the People’s Opposition Alliance, which he said involves a coalition of political activists and public figures.
Among those he listed in this camp are activist Boniface Mwangi, Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah, lawyer Miguna Miguna, former Chief Justice David Maraga, gospel musician Reuben Kigame, and lawyer Willis Otieno.
“Kenya’s emerging political formations are 1. Singapore Alliance of President Ruto-Oburu; 2. Union of (a) United Opposition of RG, SKM , (b) Linda Mwananchi of Sifuna/Babu/Orengo (c) People’ Opposition Alliance of Boniface/Omtatah/Miguna/Maraga/Kigame/Oyoo, & (d) GENZ fraternity,” Kibwana stated.
Gen Z movement
In addition to these political formations, Kibwana pointed to the growing influence of the Gen Z movement, which he described as another force shaping Kenya’s opposition politics through youth-driven activism and civic engagement.
According to the constitutional scholar, these evolving formations reflect shifting alliances and political interests as various actors position themselves ahead of the next election cycle.
Kenya’s political landscape has remained fluid since the 2022 General Election, with new alliances, cooperation agreements, and rival political blocs continuing to emerge.

Vote hunting
Kibwana’s remarks come as the various listed camps continue to criss-cross the country in a bid to woo voters ahead of the 2027 polls.
The different political blocs, on Sunday, March 8, 2026, toured various parts of the country to popularise their agenda.
While the Gachagua-Kalonzo United Opposition wing pitched camp in Meru, Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi team was welcomed by a section of Wiper leaders in Makueni for a church service.
The embattled ODM secretary general, together with his Linda Mwananchi counterparts such as Babu Owino, Saboti MP Caleb Amisi, Bomachoge Borabu MP Obadiah Barongo, and others, was welcomed by the host, Kaiti Constituency MP Joshua Kimilu, for the church service, which will culminate in a fundraiser and a roadside rally at Mukuyuni Market.
President Ruto and Oburu, on the other hand, were in Bondo, Siaya County.
During the visit, the Head of State presided over the launch of the Bondo Community Digital Hub, an initiative aimed at expanding digital access and empowering youth and entrepreneurs with technology and online opportunities.
