Kiminini residents gift Sifuna cash during Linda Mwananchi rally
By Faith Lagat, July 26, 2026In a powerful show of grassroots support, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna was overwhelmed with cash gifts from supporters during a Linda Mwananchi rally stopover in Kiminini, Trans Nzoia County, on Sunday, July 26, 2026, as the movement’s tour headed to Bungoma.
While Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya addressed the massive crowd, residents surged forward from all directions, thrusting notes into Sifuna’s hands as he stood atop his Linda Mwananchi brigade vehicle.
Completely unprepared for the spontaneous gesture, the senator had nowhere to put the money. He received cash from every corner until both his hands were full, smiling in surprise as the donations kept coming.
The scene unfolded during the ongoing Linda Mwananchi tour of the Western region. After attending a church service in Kitale earlier, the team stopped in Kiminini before proceeding to Bungoma, where Sifuna is scheduled to lead a mega rally at Posta Grounds.
People-powered funding
The spontaneous cash gifts aligned with the senator’s message that Linda Mwananchi will be funded by ordinary Kenyans rather than wealthy political financiers.
Speaking during the Trans Nzoia leg of the tour, Sifuna revealed that the movement’s paybill had raised Ksh3 million in less than three days, largely through small contributions, including Ksh0 donations from ordinary Kenyans.
“Wanasema hatuna pesa lakini watu wa Kitale wacha niwaambie, nimeona ma Ksh10bob zenu kwa paybill yetu ya Linda Mwananchi. Chini ya siku tatu, tumefikisha shilingi milioni tatu kwa paybill. Sisi hatutaenda kutafuta pesa ya ufisadi,” Sifuna said.
He reiterated that he would not seek billions from wealthy individuals who later demand tenders and favours. Days earlier, Sifuna had rejected an offer by COTU Secretary-General Francis Atwoli to help raise Ksh billion for a possible presidential campaign.
Rejects wealthy financiers
“I would rather be indebted to Kenyans because they gave me Ksh10 than Atwoli,” he declared, insisting that politics must be freed from “dirty money.”
Sifuna also pointed to the Ol Kalou by-election as proof that money alone cannot buy electoral victory.
The Kiminini episode, with supporters filling his hands with cash while Natembeya spoke, reflected the people-powered funding model that he has continued to champion through the Linda Mwananchi movement.
While Linda Mwananchi continues its mobilisation across the country ahead of the 2027 General Election, the movement is positioning itself as an independent political outfit funded through contributions from ordinary Kenyans.
The Kiminini stop formed part of the movement’s Western Kenya tour before the team proceeded to Bungoma for another rally as it continued seeking support across the region.
